CUC
is an affirming, diverse faith community that celebrates
a tradition of excellence in music.
We seek an enthusiastic
Choir Director/Organist to serve as Director of Music
Ministry, employed for 20-24 hours per week beginning
July 1, 2008 (negotiable).
Our chamber-sized choir with
paid section leads performs a diverse repertoire of
traditional, contemporary, and multicultural styles.
The historic Casavant organ
has five manuals and a new digitalized console.
Salary is based on RCCO
guidelines.
Permission for teaching
privileges using church facilities may be arranged.

The Duties
of the Director of Music will also include:
1. Select, prepare, play,
organize organ, piano and other instrumental music.
2. Select and prepare choir
music for services and concerts throughout the year.
3. Prepare Rehearsal Plan
and conduct choir practices on Thursday evenings
(presently 7:00 to 9:00) and Sunday mornings (presently
10:00 to 10:45, prior to 11 a.m. service.)
4. Oversee recruitment and
development of choir, continuing to encourage
university, college and high school students (presently
utilizing a scholarship program).
5. Continue to develop
relationships with other community arts groups, such as
Hamilton Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, Hamilton
Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera Hamilton, and the Hamilton
Children's Choir.
6. Carry responsibility for
overseeing the maintenance, tuning and necessary
upgrading of the musical instruments of the church.
7. Carry responsibility for
the acquiring, borrowing and/or purchasing of music, and
for the organizing and maintaining of the music library.
8. Hold at least 2 concerts
a year, involving the choir, and possibly other
community organizations.
9. Carry responsibility for
the necessary administrative aspects of the music
ministry.

DESCRIPTION
The Custodian is
responsible for maintaining the physical plant, the
interior and exterior property of Centenary United
Church by providing maintenance, cleaning, security and
custody of the church property and grounds.
The Church Custodian is
responsible to the Executive Team through the Ministry &
Personnel Committee. Direction on a day-to-day basis will be
received through the Church Administrator.
Desirable Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
1. Knowledge
of building maintenance and cleaning practices, equipment
and supplies.
2.
Knowledge of hazardous material
handling and first aid practices (Health & Safety Officer).
3. Ability
to perform maintenance, repair and caretaker tasks without
immediate supervision.
4. Ability
to learn the operation and care of a variety of tools and
equipment required to complete tasks
5. Ability
to understand and follow written and oral instructions
6. Ability
to work harmoniously with parishioners, other staff and the
general public
7. Ability
to comply with rules of confidentiality established within
the church.
The person occupying
this position will perform maintenance and cleaning duties
in such a manner to reflect the care and pride of the faith
community in its facilities as an instrument for ministry in
accordance with the Centenary mission statement of our
commitment to be a safe, diverse faith community offering
acceptance and hope.
Specific Duties
1. Operate
heating and air-conditioning systems as required.
2. Perform
routine safety checks as required, including fire and alarm
systems, maintain necessary documentation.
3. Maintain
security system in co-ordination with the church’s security
company.
4. Collect
and remove garbage, recycling and green bin material from
the buildings daily. Clean garbage containers, recycling and
green bins and replace bags as required.
5. Clean
toilets, washbasins, urinals, and all other plumbing
fixtures as required. Ensure washrooms are supplied with all
needed products. Clean floors (sweep and/or mop). Conduct
‘black light’ cleaning of washrooms as scheduled.
6. Maintain
a level of cleanliness and order in the kitchens to meet
health codes, including:

Clean and maintain stoves as
per commercial instructions on a weekly routine
·
Defrost freezers and clean
refrigerators and freezers as needed
·
Clean and sanitize all sinks
using approved agents
·
Wash and store dishes and
utensils found in the kitchen
7. Vacuum
and wet mop floors and carpets as required.
8. Maintain
stock of all required cleaning and paper products and
re-order as necessary.
9. Set
up and take down of tables and chairs for meetings and
services as required.
10.
Maintain cleanliness and order in the church space of the
building on a daily and weekly basis and attend to
situations as required.
11. Conduct
needed maintenance repairs as required and report need for
major repairs to the Executive Team.
12. Plant,
weed and water outside planters.
13. Change
outside sign boards as scheduled.
14. Keep
parking areas, walkway and all entrances and exits clear of
snow and ice.
15.
Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings to ensure
full co-ordination and implementation of overall Centenary
programs.
16. Supervise
outside contractors/tradespersons if building related.
17. Perform
other related duties from time to time assigned or required.
18. Ability to
take initiative to proactively identify custodial needs of
the church.
Note:
The job description is based on a 40-hour work week but
flexibility is required to accommodate large projects and
special church functions such as weddings, funerals,
celebrations, concerts etc. The hours will be planned in
consultation with the Church Administrator to effectively
use available help.
The person occupying the
position is responsible to the Church Administrator. Normal
work hours will be 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday with occasional
additional hours of overtime.
Wages are commensurate
with experience. A police background check is required of
the successful applicant.
