With the
Minister
of
Music: Brian Turnbull
BIO
After
receiving his ARCT in piano during high school, Brian went on to
study organ at the University of Toronto. His mentors were
Douglas Bodle, Healey Willan and Dr. Charles Peaker. His choral
studies were with Dr. Elmer Iseler and Lloyd Bradshaw.
Travelling to Cambridge, England, Turnbull studied choral
technique with Stephen Cleobury of King's College, George Guest
of St. John's College and John Rutter of Clare College. On the
same course, Turnbull studied both organ and choral skills with
John Scott at St. Paul's Cathedral in London.
Recently, Brian was asked to be a "Founding Fellow" of the
Honourable Company of Organists, an international organization
(Toronto) recognizing talented church musicians.
On the
occasion of the Proclamation of the Constitution Act, 1982,
Brian had the honour of being chosen as a young achiever for the
Halton Riding and was privileged to dine with other young
achievers from each electoral riding in the presence of the
Prime Minister, The Right and Honourable Pierre Elliot Trudeau
as well as Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Duke
of Edinburgh.
Brian
received his music degree in 1971 with honours from the
University of Toronto, followed by his Bachelor of Education in
1972 from the same university.
Turnbull recently retired from the Halton District School Board
but has returned to teach Grades 1,2 and 3 music at Eastview
Public School. Turnbull has been on the Occasional Teachers list
since his retirement. He is involved in the summer organ recital
series given at St. James Anglican Church in Orillia and is the
summer organist at Brechin United Church. Brian continues to
direct the Tempus Choral Society, a 100 voice community choir
based in Oakville.

Sing with us-we will extend
to you a very warm welcome and you can experience a choral
rehearsal with this talented group. Who knows you may even
want to join us, and we would love that! We have a lot of
fun and sing some great music. As well it is a very
powerful and personal way of worship!

Teen Folk Group
This singing group is open to
all young people in Hamilton, who love to sing. You do not
have to be a member of Centenary to join this great group.
Our first concert will feature 'Mass for a Secular City'.
The practices will be an hour in length and our first
practice will be Monday September 14. If you like making
friends, singing and having fun you will enjoy this group
under the direction of Brian Turnbull. Singers and
Guitarists are needed-so tell anyone you know who may be
interested in this group.

Centenary Childrens Choir
Our new chorus for
children-6-11 will meet Thursdays at 430 at Centenary. We
welcome all young singers and hope to have enough great
talent to put on a Christmas Pagaent. Open to all - the
children's families do not have to be members of Centenary.
This choir is part of the
mission of the Centenary music department. This will be a
lot of fun and a great experience for younger children who
wish to learn about the voice and sing some really neat
music. Our first practice will be Thursday September 10.
